Every day, Ivara cut the same bright loop beneath the lotus leaves, chasing the tick-tick of seedpods and the green smell of rain on pads. Until one day a silver river eel shot from a crack in the canal wall and cried, “Fast water’s open!” Because of that, Ivara plunged after him into a cold ribbon of current; because of that, her patterned fins flashed through bubbles, roots, and thunder-lit swirls she had only heard at night. At last she burst back beneath the lotus blooms, breathless and certain: the loop had not been a cage, but a doorway, and she was exactly where the fast water began.
