Every dusk, Juno tapped the brass knob on her old bat before the fairground game, hearing the same bright ping under the smell of dust and fried onions. Until one day the knob spun like a compass and pointed away from the diamond. Because of that, she chased it through canvas alleys where calliope music snapped and banners whipped; because of that, the glove she carried filled with stray wind, tugging her toward a hidden field behind the carousel. At last she stepped onto the chalk line as strangers cheered her name, and the brass knob gave one bright ping.
