Before dawn, Calyx warmed his mother’s dented thimble in his fist and stepped beyond the last cookfire to fetch an oath-mark from the old colossus. The path through the titan ruins smelled of rain on stone; shale bit his boots, and he paid with a torn glove and one trembling breath. When the giant’s eyes kindled, Calyx held up the thimble, not his sword. “For mending, not marching,” he said. The colossus pressed one bright rune into the little cup, and Calyx carried home a courage small enough to fit in his fist, warm as his mother’s dented thimble.
