🎨 How to color it

Layer deep teal on the mermaid’s knotwork tail, copper gold on her belt medallion and necklace, sea-glass green on the swirling waves, and coral pink on the small fish. Use sharp colored pencils and color the interlaced bands from the outside inward so the over-under Celtic knots stay crisp. Try a subtle shift from dark blue at the lower tail to bright turquoise near her hair, leaving a few bubbles white for sparkle.

Before the racing tide woke, Orla slipped through the spiral tide hall with a map of currents tucked in her bracelet, chasing the quick silver path that would carry her farther than any singer had gone by noon. Water hissed along the carved shell walls; her hair streamed like banners, and every knot in the old stone seemed to hum faster as she passed.

The hall opened into wider blue, full of turning eddies and pearl-sized bubbles. Orla let the strongest current coil around her wrist, laughing as it pulled her toward the sunlit channel. Then a voice, small as sand rubbing glass, said, “May I borrow a little speed?” No swimmer waited there—only a shell-spiral, breathing open and shut, its inner whorl glowing with trapped starlight.

Orla unhooked the silver path and wound it into the shell without signing her name. At once, the whole hall brightened: the shell was not taking the current away, but sending it under the reef to lift sleeping gardens into morning. Orla drifted in the gentler water, smiling at the hush of generous work nobody had watched, while the old stone knots hummed faster than before.
