Before the harvest bell, Elowen rubbed sage between her palms and shaped dough leaves for the turkey’s crown. She wanted the centerpiece to look like something made by her own hands, not borrowed from Aunt Marra’s silver cupboard. But the platter sat bare and cold, and the hall smelled of wax, pepper, and rain through the open shutters.
Under the carving board, where nobody ever checked, Elowen found a flat wooden press carved like a maple leaf. Inside it lay crumbs of red spice and a note: Press one leaf for thanks, one for luck, one for the hands that cooked. She pressed her dough into the secret grooves, baked each leaf crisp, and tucked them around the turkey with cranberries and rosemary.
When the bell rang, the leaves crackled softly, bright as little fires. Ever since that night, harvest turkeys have worn autumn leaves around them, to remember the hidden press and the maker brave enough to use it. If you follow the leafy crown on the platter, can you spot where Elowen’s first maple might be hiding?
