Above the noon clouds, Sol carried a silver bowl to the frost pantry, hoping to fetch one cool scoop before the heat bell chimed. The sky kitchen smelled of sugar cones and warm brass, and sunlight clicked on the tile like tiny spoons. Halfway down the sundial stairs, a cloud-moth no bigger than a cherry bumped his sleeve, its wings dusty with frost. “Please,” it whispered, “my lantern went out.”
Sol had only one frost token. Without it, the scoop would melt before he reached the bell. Still, he tucked the token into the moth’s little lantern and watched it glow soft blue. The moth fluttered ahead, lighting a hidden shortcut through the cone racks, where three scoops waited in the shade, firmer than snowballs. Sol hurried back with the bowl just as the bell gave one sleepy bong.
No one saw him slip the extra scoop onto the sun cake for the tired dishwashers below. But the next warm ray tasted faintly of vanilla, and if you spot the happy sun between the cones, maybe you’ll know who shared the cool.
