Under the round hatch of his moon burrow, Orlo tapped his helmet twice and whispered his dare: bring back one true echo before Earth climbed above the cliffs. His room smelled of warm wires and dust cookies, safe as a pocket. Outside, the gray ground crunched like old cereal under his boots. He passed the silent crater bowls and the leaning pebble markers, giving up his last glow-pebble when a little rover blinked its empty lamp at him.
Beyond the tallest ridge, a cluster of crystals stood in the dark, shaped like stars that had grown roots. Orlo touched one point with a careful glove. Ting. The sound ran through the stones, up his antennae, and back in a voice not quite his: “Home is not a hole. Home is who answers.”
He carried no crystal away. Instead, he hurried back with the ringing still fizzing in his bones, and fixed his glow-pebble into the burrow window so the rover could find him anytime. When Earth rose blue and bright, Orlo tapped his helmet twice again. If you spot the star-crystals, keep their secret: they answered before he did.
