She wanted the flames to match the old swirls carved above the party table before the guests came in. But the middle flame bent sideways, though no window was open, and a gold star charm behind the balloons whispered, “Not down there.”
Selka smelled warm wax and sugar icing as she climbed onto a gift box and reached into the balloon strings.
