Before breakfast, Juniper folded paper birds from the ship’s old menus and tucked them beside empty deck chairs. She wanted strangers to find a small surprise after the long gray nights at sea. The wind smelled of salt and engine smoke, and the waves slapped the hull with a hollow boom-boom-boom.
By noon, three birds were gone. In their places lay gifts no passenger had mentioned: a ribbon of kelp, a pearly shell, and one smooth pebble still wet and cold. Juniper leaned over the rail. “Who’s there?” she whispered.
A round eye rose beside the bow, then a whale calf puffed a misty cloud that curled like the ship’s smoke. Juniper laughed softly and folded one more bird, bigger than the rest, with a blue stripe on each wing. She let it sail down to the water, where the calf nudged it along the foam. Next time you see the ship’s smoke trailing over the waves, imagine a secret thank-you floating just below it.
