🎨 How to color it

Give the dragon emerald green scales, the four eggs pale speckled gold, the woven nest warm brown, and the cliff rocks soft gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the many scale shapes and nest twigs, coloring small sections from the outside edges toward the middle. Try making the wing membrane a lighter mint green so it feels sunlit above the darker curled tail.

High above the cedar tops, Darrow pressed warm twigs into a circle and whispered, “Tap, roll, hush.” He had invented a game for the eggs: one claw-tap, one tiny roll, then everyone stayed still as stone. The wind smelled like pine needles and far rain, and it kept trying to sneak under the nest.

Tap, roll—crick! One egg bumped a pebble and did not crack. Instead, a little diamond mark popped up on its shell. Darrow blinked. He tapped another egg, softer than falling moss. Crick-crick-crick! More marks rose, neat as dragon scales. The wind slid over them and could not shove them away.

So here is the secret: dragon eggs wear scales because Darrow’s cliff game taught them how to grip their home. Ever since, dragon nests belong on high ledges, with eggs tucked close and scaled for the wind; can you spot the game circle waiting among the twigs?
