🎨 How to color it

Try coral roses, butter-yellow sunflowers, violet tulips, and sage leaves, with the butterflies in soft blue and orange. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny wing dots and vine spirals, then fill the larger petals with light layered strokes. For a polished twist, shade each ring of the mandala from warm colors in the center to cooler greens and blues at the outer butterflies.

Every day, Crispin polished the spiral records in the round conservatory, tracing each curl with one damp silver foot before the noon bell. The work smelled of ink, pollen, and old rain; if he hurried, the sunflowers opened exactly on schedule. Then a blue-orange butterfly landed on the central seal, bowed as if in court, and sneezed it three petals to the left.

Because of that, every rose opened sideways, every tulip rang like a teaspoon, and the daisies began arguing in tiny papery voices. Because of that, Crispin could not simply shove the seal back; he had to wait while the butterfly hiccupped out the missing pollen grains, one ridiculous puff at a time. At last the final speck settled, the spirals clicked into place, and noon arrived late but golden. Crispin polished the first curl again, smiling at the smell of ink, pollen, and old rain.
