Under the fern hollow, Vira kept a private challenge: follow one unbroken curl from its first bend to its final secret before the evening dew fell. The curl began on the rim of her shell, where etched leaves and dotted waves caught the low green light, then seemed to slip away into the path. She left the cool moss of home and crossed the grit between mushroom stems, listening to beetle feet tick in the darkening soil.
At the tallest pebble, the line vanished. A silver slug in a cracked acorn cap asked for one shell stripe to mend his lantern wick; Vira let him lift the thinnest blue-green band, and the loss felt cold as rain on bare skin. When the lantern sparked, its glow showed the missing curl was not gone at all. It had become a tiny fern-shaped mark on the underside of her shell, visible only when she turned toward home.
Vira returned slower than she had left, carrying no perfect stripe, but the hollow smelled sharper, wetter, more awake. All night, whenever dew tapped the leaves, her secret mark answered with a faint green glimmer, and curiosity kept running its quiet spiral from the first bend to the final secret.
