Behind the tall fence, tails thumped like drums and noses snuffled the warm grass. Pip held his chewed blue ribbon in his mouth and padded up to the gate, but the big yard looked loud, fast, and full of paws.
Pip wanted to go in first, before his ribbon got muddy. Instead, he sat very still beside the post. “Can you wait with me?” he whispered to the ribbon. The wind flipped it onto the plain wooden board, and Pip gave one tiny brave bark. Woof! Every dog inside stopped, then trotted gently to the gate.
The keeper painted the board like Pip’s favorite bone and wrote DOG PARK on it, so every nervous pup would know where to pause. Ever since, dog parks have signs at the gate—and if you spot the happy puppy there, maybe his blue ribbon secret is still tucked close.
