🎨 How to color it

Give the treasure chest warm walnut brown panels, antique gold trim, ruby and emerald gems, and smoky orange flames in the wall torches. Use sharp pencils for the tiny scrollwork, coin lettering, and skull-and-crossbones panel, then shade the broader wooden boards with long even strokes. Try making the vault stones cool blue-gray so the gold coins and jeweled lock glow like the only warm light in the room.

In the hush below the shipyard, where old stone breathed salt and torch smoke, Corwin set three coins on his knee and invented Coinlight: crown-side for candle, ship-side for star, plain edge for a wish. He wanted one more dull coin to finish the circle, the kind that held light softly instead of flashing it back. So he left his counting stool, crossed the cold vault floor, and traded his best red gem to a sleepy rat guard for a tarnished piece tucked beneath the anchor rope.

Back at the chest, the dull coin did not shine. It gathered every small gleam—the torches, the jewels, the pale cobwebs—and sent it back in a mellow ring. Corwin laughed under his breath, then opened both hands and called the night watch in to play. Soon each pirate held one borrowed spark, passing candle, star, and wish around the treasure until the vault felt less like a hiding place than a quiet room full of dawn.
