🎨 How to color it

Layer the continents in parchment tan and moss green, the oceans in pale blue, the compass roses in brass gold, and the curled banners in aged ivory. Use sharp colored pencils for the coastlines, latitude lines, ship rigging, and tiny dragon scales, keeping your hand light so the engraving marks remain visible. Try a subtle blue-to-teal ocean gradient inside the round map, then leave the outer margin cleaner so the ornate border feels like an old chart plate.

Every evening, Selwyn set one challenge before the lamps burned low: carve a single flawless line from the north notch of his copper plate to the south, without lifting the burin. The printshop smelled of oil, metal dust, and damp paper; outside, carriages hissed through rain. Until one day, as his wrist reached the equator, the tool caught on a grain no eye could see and sang like a glass rim.

Because of that bright slip, the line bent eastward. Because of that bend, the ink in nearby seas gathered itself into little waves, nudging ships, monsters, and compass points into places his hand had not planned. Selwyn did not scrape it away. He breathed once, warmed the plate with his palm, and followed the living curve until it found south by a route of its own.

At dawn he pulled the first print. The line was not perfect; it was better. It held the tremor of muscle, rain, and decision, and the whole round world seemed prouder for having been made by hand.
