Color the oceans bright turquoise, the continents leafy green, the elephant soft gray, and the turtle’s shell olive with sandy flippers. Use colored pencils for the small coastline bends, tree tops, feathers, and shell patches so the details stay crisp. Under the hush of the world rim, Nico rolled a plain clay bead between his fingers. It clicked softly, tick-tick, against his thumbnail while he searched for the one place that would feel like home. A wind smelling of salt lifted first. A bird cried once and crossed the high air. Then the ground gave a warm, dusty thump as an elephant stepped from the sunlit land. Last came a turtle, dark with sea shine, paddling through the blue curve below. Nico held up the bead. “Do you know this mark?” he whispered.

The three dents began to glow: wing, foot, flipper. Nico pressed the bead into the world rim, and it fit with a soft click, like a door closing in the right room.
