🎨 How to color it

Give the rabbit’s chef coat a clean white with sky-blue shadows, the tall striped hat cherry red and cream, the salad leaves leafy green, and the tomatoes bright scarlet. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny paw prints, clock numbers, jar labels, and the wavy band on the salad bowl, then switch to broader strokes for the coat and curtains. Try a secret pattern by alternating two greens in the lettuce and adding a warm yellow glow on the spoon where it dips into the bowl.

Before the lunch bell, Quillby set out from his warm chopping stool with one empty spoon and one plan: fetch crackle-herb from the windowsill before anyone else heard it pop. The kitchen smelled of pepper, wet lettuce, and onion skins. Past the hanging pans he tiptoed, but the old soup kettle hissed, “Psst. Not yet.”

Quillby tapped his foot. Tick, tick, went the wall clock. He gave the kettle three shiny peppercorns to stop its teasing, but it only breathed steam toward the herb pot. The leaves stayed still. Waiting made his paws twitch; waiting made his whiskers droop. Then—snap!—one tiny leaf curled open with a sound like a secret door.

He carried it back to the biggest salad bowl and stirred slowly, not fast, because the crackle spread from leaf to tomato to cucumber in cheerful little clicks. If you find his spoon in the bowl, keep this between us: the best crunch began after Quillby stopped hurrying toward it.
