🎨 How to color it

Give the top-hat drummer soft teal fur, the BOOM drum cherry red and cream, the star banners sunny yellow, and the balloons sky blue and lavender. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny flags, stars, and confetti, then switch to markers for the drummer’s broad body and the open road curves. Try making every star on the big parade arch a different warm shade, like lemon, gold, peach, and coral.

Every evening before the Festival Parade, Wembly tightened his drum straps and tapped one careful BOOM so the smallest monsters could practice their steps. The sound rolled past balloon carts, under paper flags, and into alleys that smelled of popcorn and rain-wet stone. But one parade night, his drum answered with only a soft poof. The front row kept waving, yet the little monsters at the curb blinked in the sudden quiet.

Because of that, Wembly marched slower, listening. Because of that, he heard a tiny rattle inside the drum rim, where nobody ever looked because it was hidden beneath painted stars. He slipped his claw under the edge and found a pale hush-shell, cool as a moon pebble, packed with all the leftover booms from rehearsals. “You were saving them?” he whispered.

Wembly could have thundered louder than any parade before. Instead, he tucked the shell beneath the smallest flag stand, where shy monsters who missed the music could press an ear close and hear a gentle boom of their own. No one saw him do it. The parade rolled on in gold light, and if you can spot the drum marked BOOM, maybe you can guess where the quiet sound went next.
