Every day, Calla glided the cloudway hills with her hands folded, carrying her grandmother’s old halo above her head like a secret silver cookie. She wanted it to sit straight through morning rounds, but it always gave one tiny hic! whenever she passed the cinnamon-smelling wind vents.
Until one day, the halo hiccuped so hard it popped sideways and rang like a dinner bell. Because of that, the cloud sheep stampeded into puffy towers. Because of that, the valley kites below twisted their strings around the church weather vane and spelled HELP in the breeze.
Calla snorted, then clapped both hands over her mouth. “Oh, behave, you shiny doughnut!” she whispered. The halo hiccuped again—hic-hic-hooray—and the cloud sheep lined up as if they had been waiting for her signal all along. Calla guided them into a bridge, freed the kites, and floated home with her crooked halo chiming proudly. Next time you spot her above the hills, see if that secret silver cookie is about to hic.
