Every dawn, before the steam vents hissed, Bramble charged the Fernline Trail with bundles tied under his frill. He wanted every nest along Cinder Palms to have breakfast before the ash siren boomed. The path clattered with pebbles under his feet, and the air smelled of warm mud and crushed leaves.
Until one day, the volcano coughed early—WHUMP!—and black dust rolled over the sky. Because of that, Bramble skidded into the old pebble crossing instead of the main trail. Because of that, his horn knocked loose a flat stone nobody had ever bothered to lift. Under it sat a dry hollow packed with fern cakes, water gourds, and a shell note: FOR WHOEVER RUNS OUT FIRST.
“Then first means everyone,” Bramble puffed. He left his own bundles there too, kicked the stone half-shut, and raced on as pterosaurs shrieked through the smoky light. By sunset, every nest had found the secret stash, and nobody knew who had made it bigger. Next time you spot Bramble’s grin near those scattered stones, can you keep the hidden hollow’s secret too?
