🎨 How to color it

Color the shuttle bright white with cherry-red booster tips, steel-blue control consoles, and golden-yellow flames under the three engines. Use sharp colored pencils for the console buttons, circular gauges, and stacked floodlights, then switch to broader strokes for the smoke clouds. Try shading the smoke from pale lavender at the edges to warm gray near the launch pad so the fire looks extra bright.

The night before launch, when the air smelled like hot wires and rain on concrete, Imani pressed her ear to the mission-control console and counted every beep. She wanted the countdown to be clean: ten beeps, no hiccups, no ghosts. But after “three,” a tiny voice under the floor whispered, “Me too.” Nobody else heard it over the fans, so Imani crawled beneath the desk with a flashlight between her teeth.

Here is the secret part: the whisper was not in the speakers. It came from a dusty lunchbox wedged behind a floor panel, where a family of clockwork crickets had been clicking along with launches for years. Their smallest cricket held up a crumb-sized silver button. “For luck,” it chirped. Imani tucked the button into the main microphone just as the engines shook the room like thunder in a tin can.

When the rocket rose, the button made every happy gasp in mission control bounce upward with the flame. The crew laughed, shouted, and waved, and the rocket carried their cheers all the way past the clouds. Ever since, launch crews never stay quiet at liftoff. If you spot the hands in the control room, maybe you know whose cheer is still riding the roar.
