🎨 How to color it

Try a glacier white shell, steel gray cage bars, navy blue padding shadows, and red side straps for a classic goalie look. Use sharp colored pencils for the narrow bars, screw circles, oval vents, and crosshatched strap pads so the small details stay crisp. Add a faint icy blue shadow inside the eye opening to make the mask feel cool and ready for the crease.

Behind the south bleachers, where the concrete smelled like wet laces and popcorn salt, Nolan carried the team’s spare goalie mask by one strap. It whistled every time the air rolled through the service tunnel. He wanted silence before warmups, because everyone said a whistling mask meant trouble.

Then something clicked from a drain grate. A pale cricket, no bigger than a skate rivet, hopped onto the mask’s cage. “Don’t plug the vents,” it said. “They’re doors.” Nolan froze. The cricket tapped each oval hole, and the tunnel answered with tiny echoes: rink hum, blade scrape, faraway cheers. The mask was not warning anyone. It was listening for its goalie.

So Nolan carried it back without stuffing tape in a single opening. When the goalie lifted it, the whistle tucked itself into the bars like a secret hello. Ever since, goalie masks keep their little vents open, so they can hear where they belong before the puck drops. If you spot those oval doors, don’t tell everyone what they’re for.
