Under the whispery palm, Saffron kept a smooth brown seed tucked inside one braid. She nudged it every morning, click-click, because it had come from the last tree her mother ever rested under. She wanted it to sprout beside her own shady patch, but the sand smelled dry as chalk.
So Saffron stepped beyond the cool roots and followed a silver beetle trail toward the old water crack. Hot wind combed her mane. A thorn bush snagged one braided tassel, and the little seed dropped into the dust. Saffron breathed in the sharp smell of stone, picked it up gently, and found one dark cup of water hiding between two rocks.
Before she could soak the seed, a tiny lizard crawled out, its sides fluttering like paper. “First sip,” Saffron murmured, and tipped the water with her nose. The lizard drank; one drop slid onto the seed anyway. By evening, Saffron returned with the seed damp against her braid and a secret green point showing. Next time you notice the palm, try to spot where a new promise might be starting under the whispery shade.
