High above the rink, where the air smelled like popcorn salt and cold metal rails, Nico tapped a puck softly from stair to stair. He had invented Echo Puck: one tap for “go,” two taps for “great shot,” three taps for “we see you.” He wanted the quiet kids in the very top row to feel the cheer rumble up to their sneakers.

So he stepped out from his usual aisle seat and skated down for a closer tap near the glass. The crowd boomed like rain on a roof. Nico swung, but his stick blade cracked with a dry little snap. The puck leaped away instead of rolling, and for one breath he thought his game was over.

Then the top row answered: tap-tap-tap on cups, knees, and handrails. The sound traveled back warmer than the cocoa in Nico’s mitts. “Again?” someone called.
