Under the blue hush of the coral garden, Carys tapped a pearl with her fingernail—tick—and began her new game: count every bubble before it reached the kelp roof. She wanted to beat nine hundred before moonrise, but the bubbles kept slipping sideways, as if someone unseen were breathing riddles into the water. Tick, tick, tick. A silver shrimp clicked from a red coral branch, “You missed the shy ones.”
Carys chased a string of tiny bubbles behind a broken reef arch, where the water smelled sharp and salty, like storms far away. There she found the old sea crown, bare as a hoop, rocking in the sand. Each bubble she counted landed on it and became something else: a pearl, a scallop fan, a tall spiral shell, a curl like a frozen wave. The more curious she grew, the more the crown gathered the sea’s secrets.
When the nine hundredth bubble touched the middle, the crown stopped rocking. Ever since, sea crowns have worn shells to remember the creatures that whispered first, pearls to hold the counted bubbles, and curling wave tails so no tide can sneak past without being noticed. If you follow the smallest bubbles, can you tell which secret Carys counted last?
