Under the ping-ping drip of the quartz ledge, Jinka shaved curls from a fallen moonroot twig. He wanted a staff no taller than his paw, with a hook at the top for catching runaway hat stars. The wood smelled like cold cinnamon, and each scrape left silver dust on his whiskers. “Behold,” he whispered, “the grandest tiny staff ever made.”
He poked it at a loose star on his hat. Tink! The star hopped back into place. He tapped a crystal. Plink! It sang a note so shiny it made the pine trees shiver. Feeling very official, Jinka planted the staff beside the old oval portal and bowed to his reflection, who bowed half a second late.
Then the portal’s swirls leaned toward the little hook. With a soft clack, the whole enormous star door turned, not by its gold rim or carved runes, but by Jinka’s handmade twig. Inside, sleepy comets stretched like cats. They had been waiting for someone small enough to make the missing handle. Jinka puffed up so proudly his scarf wobbled; next time you spot that tiny hooked staff, see if it still smells of cold cinnamon.
