Under the fern grove’s rustling roof, Vessa set herself a challenge: she would wait for three perfect wind swirls before opening the acorn in her palms. The first swirl smelled like damp bark and mushroom caps. It lifted one oak leaf, looped it over her boot, and set it down without a sound. Vessa grinned but kept still. “One,” she whispered.
The second swirl came faster, fizzing through berry stems and tugging at the leaf points on her dress. It spun loose seeds in bright little circles, then slipped away between the ferns. Vessa’s fingers itched to crack the acorn, but she tucked her braids behind her ears and waited. Above her, tiny star-lights winked in the windy air.
The third swirl did not arrive as wind at all. A snail below the stump dragged a shining trail through fallen leaves, curling it into the same spiral the breeze had drawn overhead. Vessa laughed softly and opened the acorn; inside was a rolled brown note that smelled of rain: Follow the slow swirl too. Next time you spot the acorn in her hands, see if the quietest spiral is already starting.
