🎨 How to color it

Color the monster’s shaggy fur soft lavender, the striped horns butter yellow and coral, the daisies sunny white with golden centers, and the rose a deep raspberry pink. Use sharp colored pencils for the thin fur tufts, leaf veins, and flower centers, then switch to broader strokes for the monster’s belly and the large petals. Try a secret garden effect by making the background leaves several different greens while keeping the monster warm and bright in the middle.

The story behind this coloring page

Thistle’s Patient Bloom — Under a mossy root, Thistle kept a dull brown bead in a thimble. Read the full story →

Under a mossy root, Thistle kept a dull brown bead in a thimble. Each dawn he rubbed it with his thumb, sniffed its dusty pepper smell, and whispered, “Not yet?” He wanted one petal, just one, because the bead had been tucked into his blanket the night he arrived in the thicket.

A beetle-mapmaker told him the bead would only wake where old flowers told stories. So Thistle stepped out past the cool fern shade, carrying it under his tongue. Pebbles poked his bare feet. Pollen made his nose fizz. At the listening garden, daisies ticked in the breeze, lilies hummed, and a rose creaked open like a tiny door. Thistle waited without poking, even when ants marched over his toes.

At sunset, the bead split with a soft pop. Not a petal—two little horn stripes of gold dust fell onto him, and the rose gave one curled seed in trade. Back home, Thistle planted the new seed by his root and smiled. If you find him among the tall flowers, can you keep the secret of the bead that smelled like dusty pepper?
