Every day before sunup, Quibble raced along Rootway to be first at the morning horn. He loved the brassy blat that bounced off mushroom caps and shook dew from the grass. Big Orro waved from the path, round Nella packed berry buns, and Quibble flapped harder, wanting the horn stool for himself.
Until one day, the horn gave only a squeak-pop and sank into the ground. Because of that, Quibble dove after it and scraped moss from a root nobody noticed. Under the moss was a tiny round door, warm as toast and humming. Because of that, all three monsters tugged it open and found the missing horn beside shelves of welcome badges, maps, and lantern wicks for every new traveler who had ever reached their village.
“Rootway isn’t a race,” Quibble whispered, grinning so wide his wings buzzed. At sunrise he blew the horn from the hidden room, then handed Orro a lantern and Nella the fresh badges. When the first travelers stepped from the fern tunnel, Quibble knew the best spot was right between his friends, where the brassy blat bounced off mushroom caps.
