🎨 How to color it

Color the rainbow in classic red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, then give the apples a crisp ruby red, the orchard leaves golden green, and the distant barn a warm brick shade. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small leaves and apples, saving broader marker strokes for the rainbow bands and open sky. Try making the falling leaves shift from green near the trees to amber as they tumble toward the path.

Every afternoon, Renn raced the orchard rows with his little willow basket, trying to fill one basket for each color he could name before the supper bell clanged. Red apples thumped in first, then orange leaves, yellow pears from the neighbor row, and green windfalls cool as river stones. He had reached blue string, indigo plums, and one violet ribbon tied around the handle every day—until one gusty afternoon, the wind burst down the hill with a whoosh and scattered his careful piles.

Because of that, Renn had to chase apples under fences, leaves over ruts, and plums into the grass that smelled sharp and sweet. Because of that, he missed the bell and sat on the path with only six sorted baskets and one empty one, his fingers sticky with juice. “Wait for the sky,” called Mina from the cider shed.

So Renn waited while the clouds dragged their gray sleeves away. At last, color bent over the orchard from cloud to cloud, and the seventh basket was easy: he filled it with patience, sitting still until every apple shone. Next time you follow the winding path between the trees, can you spot where Renn’s little willow basket caught the first glow after the supper bell clanged?
