Behind the quiet dojo, Riku kept his toes on the warm wooden step and reached for the brass mission token hanging by the gate. He only had to cross the moonlit yard to take it. Easy, except the gravel whispered under every sandal, and Master Ishi’s owl bell waited to clang if anyone made one wrong scrape. Riku swallowed. The night smelled like pine sap and rain on stone.
He stepped out. Crunch. Too loud. A puff of practice smoke rolled from a hidden pot and wrapped his ankles like cold cotton. Riku almost ran back, but then—secret between us—he saw a dark line under the smoke, not on the gate at all. He crouched, paying the price of two dusty knees, and slid one finger beneath a loose stepping-stone.
Inside was a folded paper, thin as onion skin. “First missions are not taken,” it said. “They are noticed.” Riku tucked the paper into his belt and walked back without touching the brass token. His hands still shook, but his feet knew the yard now. If you check the smoke by his sandals, you might spot the place where the quiet step stopped being home.
