Under the whispery schoolyard trees, Lumo carried a red apple on his pack and a pencil between his teeth. He wanted every new student to have a welcome mark on the first-day board, but the chalk basket held only one tiny nub. Scratch, scratch—Lumo tried to write gently. The nub broke in two.
“Oh no,” he breathed. Then the apple rolled off his pack, bumped the step, and split with a soft pop. Inside, where nobody ever thought to look, lay five shiny seeds in a perfect star. Lumo pressed one seed in berry juice and stamped the board. One star became six, then twenty, until everyone had one. The teacher raised a cloth with that star above the roof, so shy walkers could see, This place is for me. Ever since, school flags carry a star—and if you spot Lumo’s apple, you know where the first one hid.
