Under the cool fern roof, Iven kept one dull amber scale beneath his tongue, smooth as old rain, and waited for it to warm. When the ringed sun rose silent beyond the marsh trees, he stepped from shade to light, trading the damp green smell for dust and bright heat. Each slow stride cost him a little comfort; flies ticked at his legs, and the path shone hard. At noon, the scale flashed once, not gold but green, pointing back to the place he had left. There, behind the ferns, a hidden spring breathed through stone. Iven drank, and the dull amber scale tasted again of old rain.
