The other glaziers were asleep, but the furnace clicked and breathed like a patient animal, and the warm lead strips smelled faintly of rain on stone. Calder’s fingers ached from cutting each curve by hand, yet the little sun he made in the middle held together.
Then the real dawn arrived.
