🎨 How to color it

Color the car cherry red, the ferry railings ocean blue, the distant lighthouse bright white with a red cap, and the rolling hills soft green. Use colored pencils for the thin rail lines and wheel details, then switch to markers for the broad ferry hull and car doors. Try a pale blue-to-lavender sky behind the clouds so the little lighthouse feels farther away.

All morning, Soren rolled along the pier with glue on his bumper and silver paper tucked under one wiper. He wanted to build a ferry-deck signal that would flash hello to the tiny lighthouse across the bay. The ferry horn boomed, deep as a drum, and gulls stitched white loops through the salty wind while Soren parked beside the rail and unfolded his cardboard star.

As the boat chugged over green, slapping water, Soren added foil points, bottle-cap buttons, and a handle made from twine. “Hold steady, little star,” he whispered. The deck boards hummed under his tires. A loose corner of paper skittered away and slid beneath the narrow bench where passengers usually tucked their shoes and picnic bags.

When Soren nudged it out, something else came with it: a flat wooden box no one had noticed, painted the same gray as the deck. Inside were tiny mirrors, brass tacks, and a note that smelled faintly of old rope: FOR ANY MAKER WHO RIDES THE BAY. Soren fixed the mirrors around his star, lifted it to the sun, and sent a bright wink racing toward the lighthouse. Next time you spot the ferry rail, see if you can find the place where a hidden box could wait, while silver paper rides the salty wind.
