Every afternoon, Benny carried his tape measure around the side yard and measured one board on the tiny cottage before snack. The metal tape went zzzip, the robins went cheep, and Benny whispered the numbers to himself so he would not mix them up. He wanted to measure the lowest trim all by himself, without calling Mom from the flower stand.
Until one day, the tape measure tickled something under the board. “Hee-hee!” said a tiny voice, and Benny jumped so hard his cap slipped sideways. Because of that, he bent closer and smelled dusty wood and minty weeds. Because of that, he saw a hidden cookie tin wedged where nobody ever looked. Inside was one rubber chicken keychain and a note: FOR THE BRAVE MEASURER. Benny laughed, clipped it to his tape, and finished the number. Next time you spot that low trim, listen for zzzip—and maybe a giggle.
