Every morning, Quibble carried a gray pebble under his flipper and tapped it three times against the reef bell: tink, tink, tink. The pebble looked like nothing, but it was the last piece of the old cave where he had first dared to swim alone. He wanted to ring the bell before the gulls screamed breakfast over the bright reef.
Until one day, a cheeky fish named Fizz snatched the pebble and zipped toward the tallest wave. “Catch me if your fins aren’t noodles!” he bubbled. Because of that, Quibble chased him through cold, fizzy spray; because of that, the tide-bell rope floated up on the far side of a curling wall of water. Quibble had never jumped that high. His belly wobbled like jellyfish jam.
Finally, he tucked his pebble tight, sprang over the wave, and tapped the bell with a ringing CLANG that startled three gulls into silence. Fizz returned the pebble with a grin. Next time you spot Quibble in midair, check whether that tiny fish looks sorry—or proud of the dare that made tink, tink, tink sound brand-new.
