Under the cool burrow steps, Quill rolled his last striped seed toward his cupboard. Scritch, scritch, it sounded on the dirt. He wanted to tuck it away before the night wind sniffed through the little door.

But the seed felt warm. Quill held it to his ear. Tap-tap! Inside, where nobody thought to look, was a tiny green curl waiting to wake. “Oh,” whispered Quill, “you need breakfast more than I do.” He carried it past the house and pressed it into the soft garden mound while no one watched. By morning, the first sunflower lifted its face there, and ever since, hamsters hold seeds close to hear which ones are asking to grow.
