Along the squeaky glacier path, Nim pressed one webbed foot to the ice and invented a game called Flipper-Floop. First, he slid left when a snow dot landed on his beak. Then he slid right when a snow dot landed on his toes. “Floop!” he chirped, and the sound bounced off the blue-white cliffs like a hiccup in a cave.
Soon Nim added rules that made no sense on purpose: wiggle for tiny flakes, bow to round ones, spin for the biggest one. The cold air smelled sharp as ice cubes, and his happy feet went swish-swish-swish. Then a giant snowflake drifted down and stopped above him. It was not waiting for Nim’s next move—it had been leading the game the whole time! Nim flapped so hard with laughter that the little flakes began to dance too, and next time you spot the big snowflake, see if it is calling “Floop!”
