Under the paper-heart garland, Tessa carried one small cookie in both paws. Its icing was shaped like a heart, and its edges smelled of butter and orange peel. She had saved it from the warm tray because the cookie reminded her of the first sunrise she had watched after moving into the little apartment above the flower shop. That morning had been pink, gold, and quiet enough to hear the radiator tick.
She climbed onto the couch between Juniper the puppy and Bram the bear, careful not to crumble her pocket-sized sunrise. Juniper’s knit hat brushed her ear; Bram’s sweater smelled faintly of cinnamon. On the table, more treats waited in spirals and scallops, but Tessa held out her one cookie as if it were a lantern. “This one is for everyone,” she whispered.
Then Bram lifted a whole plate of heart cookies from his lap, and Juniper pulled another from behind a pillow. Each friend had saved one special cookie too: a moon, a mitten, a tiny flower. Tessa laughed so brightly the hanging hearts seemed to swing. The joy was too big for one plate, so they shared crumbs with the window plants and named every cookie after a piece of sky. If you peek at their couch, can you find Tessa’s little sunrise still glowing among the hearts?
