🎨 How to color it

Color the fox pumpkin orange, the owl chestnut brown, the hedgehog warm tan, then make their striped scarves cherry red, golden yellow, and sky blue. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the big round treetops and leaf pile, and do not worry if little hands color past the lines. Try making the acorns two colors—cocoa caps and caramel nuts—so they pop out from the orange and red leaves.

Every day after lunch, Tansy the hedgehog practiced her Quiet Crunch Contest in the acorn grove. She wanted to jump into the leaf pile without making a single crackle. Scritch! Her scarf snagged a twig. Plop! An acorn rolled under her foot. Then one day, Briar the fox bounded in shouting, “Watch my mega-leap!” and sent leaves flying into Willa the owl’s feathers.

Because of that, Willa flapped and sneezed, “Hoo-choo!” Because of THAT, Briar slipped on three acorns and landed tail-first in the pile with a whump. Tansy waited, paws folded, while the grove went still. At last she tiptoed, hopped, and landed so softly that only one leaf whispered. Next time you spot the friends by the pile, can you find the patient jumper who heard that tiny whisper?
