🎨 How to color it

Color the sea turtle’s shell olive green with warm brown scutes, the branching corals in peach and lavender, and the small reef fish in lemon yellow and blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the turtle’s face scales, flipper spots, and all the thin coral branches, then switch to smoother strokes for the wide shell plates. Try a pale aqua wash in the open water so the bubbles stay bright and the turtle looks as if it is rising through light.

Under the ledge where the water hummed low, Sela tucked three ribbons of shed seagrass beneath a stone and whispered, “One flag, made by me.” Her private challenge was simple: weave a current flag before the noon light reached the brain coral. The trouble was, every strand she owned snapped like old thread. So she slipped from her cool ledge into the outer reef, where the water smelled sharp and salty and little fish clicked their teeth in the coral shadows.

Past the branching coral, Sela found silver grass caught around a fan sponge. It was strong, but a crab had tied his door with it. “Trade?” he asked, tapping. Sela gave him the smooth shell chip she had saved for polishing her nest wall. That stung a little. With the silver grass looped over her flipper, she swam back through bubbles that tickled her chin and braided each strand against her own shell, pull, tuck, pull.

By noon, the flag fluttered from her ledge, crooked and wonderful. It showed which way the current leaned, and it was hers from knot to end. Here’s the secret: next time you spot those tiny bubbles near the reef, imagine them cheering, One flag, made by me.
