Under the high windows, Rex pressed his palms to the smooth rails and lifted his legs straight out, toes pointed like arrows. His little challenge was simple: hold the shape until he heard five echoes from the empty apparatus bay. One—his breath tapped the ceiling. Two—the bar gave a tiny metal tick. Three—the blue mats sighed underneath him, smelling faintly of chalk and rubber.
He stayed there, curious enough to forget his shaking arms. Four came from the wall bars behind him, a soft wooden click. Then a fifth sound answered from somewhere beyond the stacked mats: ping-ping, not an echo at all, but a drip traveling through the old heating pipes. Rex’s eyes sharpened. The “echoes” were making a route.
He lowered down, followed the pings, and found Coach Amara’s missing stopwatch swinging from a pipe knob, ticking bravely in the draft. “So that’s where time was hiding,” Rex whispered. He clipped it beside the bars and climbed back up, ready to count again—next time you see his arrow-straight toes, can you guess which sound comes first?
