🎨 How to color it

Color the turtle’s shell moss green with golden-brown scutes, the lily pads bright emerald, and the pebbles soft gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the many shell plates and scaly flippers, tracing each section lightly before filling it in. Try adding pale blue water shadows around the curved ripple lines so the turtle looks like it is gliding just under the pond surface.

Under the lily pads, where sunlight broke into green coins, Liora pressed pond clay between her front claws. She wanted to finish a compass no bigger than a beetle’s back, with a smooth old button set in the middle. The button had come from a picnic shirt years ago, and it still smelled faintly of rain and cedar soap when the mud warmed around it.

She etched north as a reed, south as a pebble, east as a bubble, west as a curled lily root. Each mark made her shell feel taller. “There,” she whispered, and the word slipped out in a silver pop. Then the compass spun slowly in the water—not because it was magic, but because a tiny diving beetle below had grabbed the button and was polishing it like a moon.

Liora laughed so softly the duckweed trembled. From above, the compass told directions; from below, it was a ceiling star for beetle dances. She tied it to a lily stem where both uses could shine, and if you spot the small round shapes near the ripples, maybe one is still pointing east as a bubble.
