🎨 How to color it

Use golden ocher for the giraffes’ coats, chestnut brown for their patches, silvery blue for the pond, and dusty green for the acacia crown and grasses. Because the giraffes are covered in many rounded spots, color the patches first with a sharp pencil, then fill the larger bodies and background with lighter strokes. Try making the calf’s spots a little brighter than the adults’ so it feels tucked in but still easy to find.

Under the thorny shade, Cleo pressed one hoof into the warm dust and made herself a dare: count ten pond ripples without blinking. Not nine. Not almost ten. Ten. The grown giraffes stood close, smelling of sun and crushed leaves, but the water glittered beyond them like it was whispering a secret meant only for her.

So Cleo stepped out. The mud at the edge went squish-suck around her tiny hooves, and a reed scratched her knee. That was the price of going farther than usual. One ripple. Two. Three. Then—plip!—something jumped where no fish had been. Cleo nearly blinked. “Wait,” she breathed. A little beetle was tapping the water with its legs, writing circles that ran into her count and made it bigger, stranger, better.

Cleo came back with damp ankles and no perfect ten. Instead, she had a secret: ripples could be counted, but they could also be followed. Next time you notice the small calf by the water, see if you can guess which circle made Cleo forget to blink under the thorny shade.
