Under the pink-flutter branches, Rumi pressed a stick into the soft riverbank. Scratch, swoop, scratch! She made a new game called River-Path Race: float one blossom petal, then run beside it without stepping off the curvy line she drew. Her sandals thumped over the bridge boards. Water smelled cold and mossy below. “Beat the bend!” she shouted, proud of every wiggly turn her hand had made.
Past the little gate, the petal zipped ahead. Rumi chased it around stones and tufts of grass until a bright paper kite bobbed above the roofs. Its tail was not string at all—it was a long ribbon of matching curves, copied from Rumi’s muddy path! The wind had carried her game uphill, and the valley was racing with her. Next time you spot the stream curling under the bridge, can you trace Rumi’s scratch, swoop, scratch?
