🎨 How to color it

Layer the rose crown in dusty pinks and deep cranberry shadows, color the winding hair a warm chestnut, and make the background leaves sage, olive, and soft fern green. Use sharp pencils for the rose petals and tiny leaf veins, turning the page as you follow each curl so your strokes stay clean inside the tight spirals. For extra drama, keep her face softly peach and let one vine curl shift from emerald to teal as it winds past her eyes.

Every evening, Coralie raced the glass-roofed arcade before the last market bell, delivering pressed flower messages through air that smelled of rain on stone and crushed mint. She wanted the west gate unlocked before moonrise, when the traveling botanists would arrive with seeds that bloomed only in darkness. Then one night, the largest rose in her hair clicked like a tiny latch.

Because of that, Coralie pried apart its velvet center and found a compass no bigger than a beetle, its needle spinning toward the shuttered orchid gallery. Because of that, she ducked through whipping vines and bronze leaf shadows, laughing as petals snapped open like flags around her. “Not west, then,” she said, breath bright and quick.

At the gallery’s dry fountain, the compass sprang apart, and a silver seed rolled from its hollow back into her palm. Coralie planted it in the fountain dust. Water burst upward with a sound like applause, the west gate unlocked itself, and every dark-loving seed in the botanists’ satchels began to hum. By moonrise, the arcade smelled of rain on stone and crushed mint again.
