🎨 How to color it

Try burnished orange for the maple leaves, olive green for the oak leaves, chestnut brown for the acorns, and deep cranberry for the berry clusters. Use sharp colored pencils and color from the center spirals outward so the tiny acorn caps, leaf veins, and berry circles stay crisp. For a woodland glow, shade the outer tree trunks in cool gray-brown and let the mandala warm gradually toward a golden center.

Every dawn, Junia carried her tin of ocher and sienna through the hollow, touching dull leaves with color before the first wrens clicked awake. She wanted the old gathering ring to shine for the equinox walk, though no one ever saw her kneel in the cold moss. One morning, a striped field mouse stepped from an acorn cup and bowed as if she were a queen.

Because of that, Junia followed the faint scratch-scratch beneath the roots and found a storehouse of pale acorns, each one nibbled, cracked, or missed by autumn’s feast. Because of that, she opened her brightest gold and painted every cap with tiny crosshatches, sealing the shells against damp. The mouse said only, “For those still coming.” At sunrise, the ring blazed softly with leaves, berries, spirals, and hidden provisions, and Junia walked home with empty tins, smelling walnut ink and cold moss before the wrens clicked awake.
