🎨 How to color it

Try deep teal for the eight large petals, saffron for the tilted diamond panels, ruby for the many beaded circles, and indigo for the paisley corner shapes. Use a sharp colored pencil and color one ring of dots at a time, turning the page as you go so the tiny circles stay crisp. For a playful twist, make every third bead in the wide outer arch metallic gold so the mandala looks like it is quietly winking.

The studio floor smelled of pencil shavings, cold tea, and the lemon soap Petra used after smudging ink on both wrists. She had just finished cutting a mandala from paper circles and neat slanted diamonds, and she invented a game at once: tap a bead, skip a bead, name the next shape before the kettle clicked. “If I miss, the biscuits are innocent,” she announced to no one, which was the official rule of all excellent games.

Round by round, the handmade pattern seemed to develop manners. The petals lined up like polite leaves; the diamond windows leaned in as if listening; the outer arch of dots made a dry little papery tick under her fingernail. Petra began to feel absurdly grand, the way a person feels after making a thing so carefully that even its mistakes look invited.

Then she reached the center and saw the joke: in the smallest ring, one bead was not a bead at all but a crumb from the biscuit she had denied eating. It fit perfectly. Petra laughed, pressed it gently into place, and let the whole floor keep her secret in one winking circle.
