🎨 How to color it

Color the terraced fields in alternating jade green and fresh lime, the palm trunks warm tan, the distant mountains soft blue-violet, and the clouds pale peach. Use sharp colored pencils for the many narrow terrace bands, tracing each curve slowly before filling the thin spaces between the lines. Add a golden wash to the sky panels so the stained-glass arcs feel like sunrise shining over the carved hills.

Before the valley had steps, rain ran straight down the hills with a slap-slap-slap, carrying Bina’s tiny rice seedlings into the muddy ditch. She pressed her palms into wet clay and tried to make low walls, but each one sagged flat by noon. The air smelled of soaked grass and green coconut husks, and the hill shone slick as a fish. “Stay,” Bina whispered to the water, but it only hurried on.

At dusk, a stranger arrived under the palms, carrying a needle made of lightning bone and a basket of torn clouds. He was a cloud-mender, and he had dropped a silver thread. Bina returned it, then showed him her muddy hands. He did not fix the hill for her. Instead, he drew one gentle curve in the clay with his toe. “Water likes a place to rest,” he said.

All night Bina shaped curve after curve, packing each ridge smooth with her thumbs while frogs clicked in the dark. When morning rain came, it paused in every handmade step, bright and quiet, and the seedlings stood proud. Ever since, the hills in that valley hold rain in curving terraces, and if you follow the lines with your finger, can you feel where Bina’s hands pressed the first stay?
